How do I calculate bolt shear resistance for a splice?
Per Eq 3.4: F_v,Rd = α_v · f_ub · A / γ_M2. For double shear, multiply by 2. Use thread area A_s if the shear plane passes through the threaded portion, or gross area A if through the shank.
What is block tearing in a bolted connection?
Block tearing (§3.10.2) occurs when a group of bolts tears out of a plate along a combined shear/tension path. The resistance is the sum of the net tension fracture on the outstanding leg plus the shear yield along the perimeter.
How does hole type affect bearing resistance?
Larger holes reduce the net section and increase bearing stress. Normal clearance holes add 2 mm to the nominal diameter, oversized +4 mm, slotted +6 mm width. Use the effective hole diameter d₀ in the α_b and k₁ formulas.
When does a splice need moment design?
When the splice is at a point of significant bending (column splices, crane beams, frames). The flange plates carry tension/compression from M/z, the web plate carries shear. Eccentricities in the bolt group also produce secondary moments.
